Alignment Vote -results so far

Option 1: Align with BE, so that a Shires League season would be from January to November. Team members would remain in the same age group for the whole of the season. Option 2: Continue to play Shires League as we have done for the last 20 years or more, with matches, play-offs and finals starting in September and playing through to June the following year? Team members would change age group on the 1st January. However, the same players would represent the county for the whole of the season. Shires League Update 17/04/21

Dear Colleagues, May I begin this email by thanking so many people for their kind and generous words of gratitude and best health wishes that were sent to me as a consequence of problems with my Trigeminal Neuralgia condition and subsequent decision to step down as secretary of the Shires League. Ironically and fortuitous, the prompting of me writing to you all, brought back a couple of emails, one from a GP who is a SL member. The advice offered was acted up and during the last month I have been almost pain free, with little or no side effects from the drugs. Currently, there is no cure for Trigeminal Neuralgia , however it can return quite randomly but if the drugs can control it then life can almost return to normal for the time being. Three people have stepped forward in taking over the role of running of the Shires League. We can now suggest our proposal for the future of the Shires League in this letter. You may already be aware that Graham Hall, sorted the counties for the 2019-2020 league back in June 2019. I can confirm that Graham has offered to continue with this role. With a lack of data, it will be even more difficult to rank counties for the league, but Graham will do the best he can before he proceeds to arrange 6 fixtures for each county partaking in the SL, based on the information you have given Graham about the counties that are geographically nearest to your county. I have suggested that my role be further divided up to the running...

Future of Shires League Badminton – letter to members 02/03/21

Many apologies for not being in touch sooner. I hope you are all keeping well at these most difficult of times and trying to remain optimistically positive for the future, in every aspect of your life including badminton. Regretfully, my own health has taken a sudden nose-dive just before Christmas and the prognosis for the future does not look too appealing. I have waited until now before contacting you, so I could be more certain of my course of action. I have developed the condition, “Trigeminal Neuralgia”, which affects the right hand side of my face. When I have a flair-up, the pain is awful. I have found it difficult at times to eat, shave, smile, yawn, blow my nose, sneeze, move and even touch my face. During such episodes, it is very difficult to concentrate properly. There is some medication I can try; I’ve avoided this so far due to the severe side effects. There are treatments which can alleviate the problem, but at present the condition is not curable and although it is not life threatening, it is most definitely life changing. Consequently, and with great regret, I feel it is only right to ask you all to accept my resignation from the role of Shires League Secretary. Hopefully, by letting you know now, I am hoping that a new candidate for the role can be found in time before the Shires League can start up again following the pandemic and the lockdowns. The new candidate will have my full support. Subject to my condition, I will give as much help and advice as is needed to...

Planning for next season

Dear Colleagues, Many thanks for returning your votes for proposals A and B. A. Complete the 2019-2020 season (giving no-blame cancellations where desired,) including the finals in the best form possible. B. Start the 2020-2021 season as soon as practical using even age groups, on the understanding that a new vote for the Age Group will take place in April 2021 The results are shown in the table below.  Proposal AProposal BAvonYYBerkshireYYBuckinghamshireNYCambridgeshire  CheshireYYCornwallNYCumbriaYYDerbyshireYYDorsetNYDevonYYEssexYYGloucestershireYYGwent  HampshireYYHerefordshire  HertfordshireYYKentYYLancashireYNLeicestershireYYLincolnshireNYMiddlesexYYNorthumberland YNorfolkYYNottinghamshireYYNorthantsNYOxfordshireYYShropshireYYSuffolkYYStaffordshireYYSussexNYSurreyYYWiltshireYYWarwickshireYYWorcestershireNYYorkshireYYIn favour2431Against71 There is a clear majority in favour of both proposals A and B. It is highly likely that a conclusion of last season will be taking place simultaneously with the commencement of the new season, including Play-Offs and Finals. Action regarding proposal A – completion of last season As soon as I believe the time is right and when there is clear evidence that competition badminton will resume, I shall make the necessary contacts to sort out dates for the finals and check on availability of halls and cancellation charges. At this time I shall advise whether remaining matches from last season might be played. There will certainly be the option of applying a “no-blame-cancellation” to any remaining matches (or even conceding them), although if time permits I hope that at least some of the outstanding matches will be played. It may be necessary to only invite the top 8 teams from the league to each final, in which case the Play-Off matches will be deemed void. If 12 court venues are not available to hold the final on the dates needed, then other options will be considered. If any of the matches take place in...

Zoom meeting minutes from 16/05/20

Zoom Meeting: Saturday, 16/05/20 from 7:15pm until 8:45pm Click HERE to see latest voting Dear Colleagues, We had a very successful Zoom meeting yesterday and hope that our AGM meeting for this season can be conducted in the same way. It will cut down on travelling time, costs and more-over ensure that most counties can easily attend the meeting so that decisions are more collective. I endeavour to summarise the findings of the meeting below:- Overview On 01/05/20, Ian sent out a SL newsletter outlining a plan for re-introduction of SL badminton. Although some aspects were discussed with Mark Downie, the majority of the document was created unilaterally. Since it was written, the situation has changed somewhat. The purpose of this meeting was to seek other points of view, which will be taken into account and may be used as a starting point for a proposal for the development of the SL.The UK government document published on 11/05/20 was of little help in moving forward with SL badminton; the League Secretary has read all 60 pages. It certainly was not as comprehensive as the Irish government document. However, it has become clear that August date finals are out of the question. It is however, still feasible, though quite unlikely, that some badminton may resume in September or October. It was felt to be more likely to be November or December. The general consensus of the meeting at this moment in time is that by January 2021, we can plan with a much greater degree of success. Completion of Shires League 2019-2020 Most counties but not all, agreed that this...

Age groups for SL 2020-21

Hampshire and Derbyshire have asked me to add a fourth option to the list. I have used the proposal made by myself at the AGM last July as in essence it covers their recommendations. This option was either totally rejected at the AGM or received one vote. Click here to see the voting so far Following a request from Lancashire, I have added a chart below showing examples of dates of birth of players and their BE age category on different dates during 2020-22. Please bear in mind that for example an U16 player is eligible to play in U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 matches etc.   DOB of player Age group on Age group on Age group on Age group on Age group on Age group on Age group on Age group on Age group on 20/09/2020 15/11/2020 07/01/2021 11/03/2021 04/05/2021 16/07/2021 10/10/2021 19/12/2021 15/02/2022 02/03/2010 U11 U11 U12 U12 U12 U12 U12 U12 U13 17/08/2010 U11 U11 U12 U12 U12 U12 U12 U12 U13 13/01/2009 U12 U12 U13 U13 U13 U13 U13 U13 U14 28/09/2009 U12 U12 U13 U13 U13 U13 U13 U13 U14 18/02/2008 U13 U13 U14 U14 U14 U14 U14 U14 U15 23/11/2008 U13 U13 U14 U14 U14 U14 U14 U14 U15 20/04/2007 U14 U14 U15 U15 U15 U15 U15 U15 U16 24/12/2007 U14 U14 U15 U15 U15 U15 U15 U15 U16 30/01/2006 U15 U15 U16 U16 U16 U16 U16 U16 U17 02/06/2006 U15 U15 U16 U16 U16 U16 U16 U16 U17 11/05/2005 U16 U16 U17 U17 U17 U17 U17 U17 U18 09/09/2005 U16 U16 U17 U17 U17 U17 U17 U17 U18 07/02/2004 U17 U17...
