Hampshire and Derbyshire have asked me to add a fourth option to the list. I have used the proposal made by myself at the AGM last July as in essence it covers their recommendations. This option was either totally rejected at the AGM or received one vote.
Following a request from Lancashire, I have added a chart below showing examples of dates of birth of players and their BE age category on different dates during 2020-22. Please bear in mind that for example an U16 player is eligible to play in U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 matches etc.
|DOB of player||Age group on||Age group on||Age group on||Age group on||Age group on||Age group on||Age group on||Age group on||Age group on|
If having studied the proposals, you don’t think you understand them, then please give me a ring on 01785 822624 and I will try and explain better.
If you have already voted and your opinion is still the same, do nothing. If you have already voted and you wish to change your mind, please let me know. Please make sure you vote before 30/03/2020. Depending on whether I receive other plans or the result of the preferred options, I will decide how to proceed on 31/03/2020.
We now have two significantly different choices; play the league over two BE age groups from September to June (options 1, 2 and 3) or play the league during one BE age group.
I shall add the votes together for options 1, 2 and 3 and compare with the total votes for option 4.
If the total votes for options 1, 2 and 3 is greater than the votes for option 4, option 4 will be dismissed and those people who voted for option 4 will have the opportunity to vote for options 1, 2 or 3.
If option 4 receives the most votes, options 1, 2 and 3 will be dismissed. We will then need a second vote to decide whether to play even or odd age groups.
Apart from Option 4, most of the information below is copied from the earlier email.
|Current seasonSL 2019-20||Birth year||Duration of age group category||Future age group category|
|SL U12||2009 or later||Remains U12 until 31/12/20||Becomes U13 on 01/01/21|
|SL U14||2007||Remains U14 until 31/12/20||Becomes U15 on 01/01/21|
|SL U16||2005||Remains U16 until 31/12/20||Becomes U17 on 01/01/21|
|SL U18||2003||Remains U18 until 31/12/20||Becomes U19 on 01/01/21|
|SL U20||2001||Remains U20 until 31/12/20||Becomes U21 on 01/01/21|
Players begin the league from 01/09/20 at an even age group (eg U12, U14, U16, U18, U20) up to 31/12/20 and complete the season (from 01/01/21 to 30/06/21) at the next odd age group (eg U12 to U13, U14 to U15, U16 to U17, U18 to U19 and U20 to U21
We consider adopting a new name for the league:-
|Old name||New name||Birth year|
|SL U12||SL U12>13||2009 or later|
|SL U14||SL U14>15||2007|
|SL U16||SL U16>17||2005|
|SL U18||SL U18>19||2003|
|SL U20||SL U20>21||2001|
Up to 31/12/20, all even age players will continue playing at the top of their age group whilst the odd age group players will play at the top of their age group in most gold, silver and bronze events. On 01/01/21 everyone will move up an age group. And from 01/01/21, all odd age will be at the top of their age group for both SL and BE events, while even age players will be younger section for both SL and BE events.
For subsequent seasons, the league name will remain identical and the birth year will move up one year (eg. SL U12>13 birth year would become 2010 or later)
Mark Downie (BE) opinion:-
Option 1 is effectively a ‘replay’ of the current SL season because the season of the age group is extended into December ‘U12’ now is the same as ‘U12’ in September so you have accepted the same age group. By keeping U12 then you could be making it more difficult for the younger players to get into the lowest team, and giving the oldest players another year. This might be preferable depending on how well youngest age teams are fielded and what retention is like at the top with plyers going off to university etc.
Players begin the league on 01/09/20 at an odd age group (eg U11, U13, U15, U17, U19) up to 31/12/20 and complete the season (01/01/21 to 30/06/21) at the next even age group (eg U11 to U12, U13 to U14, U15 to U16, U17 to U18 and U19 to U20
We consider adopting a new name:-
|Old name||New name||Birth year|
|SL U12||SL U11>12||2010 or later|
|SL U14||SL U13>14||2008|
|SL U16||SL U15>16||2006|
|SL U18||SL U17>18||2004|
|SL U20||SL U19>20||2002|
Up to 31/12/20, all odd age will be at the top of their age group for both SL and BE events, while even age players will be younger section for both SL and BE events. On 01/01/21 everyone will move up an age group. And from 01/01/21, all even age will be at the top of their age group for both SL and BE events, while odd age players will be younger section for both SL and BE events.
For subsequent seasons, the league name will remain identical and the birth year will move up one year (eg. SL U11>12 birth year would become 2011 or later)
Mark Downie (BE) opinion:-
Option 2 would reflect moving the players forward a year in the competition as you have brought the age group in September forward by from ‘U12’ to ‘U11’ which moves it from players born 2009 or later to 2010 or later.
We reset the age group boundaries so that age groups run from 1st September to 31st August. This would put SL players in a different age group to Badminton England age group for at least part of the year. This could be confusing to players, plus the BE software would not work properly on the BE website, eg rejecting over age players etc.
Renaming the league to something that does not mention age may be a way forward here. (Suggestions made below, but open to better ones!) However, we would have to decide how to police the BE system so that players that were over-age, were not used in matches.
|Old name||New name||Age eligibility|
|SL U12||SL Primary||01/09/2009 or later|
|SL U14||SL Junior||01/09/2007 or later|
|SL U16||SL Youth||01/09/2005 or later|
|SL U18||SL Higher||01/09/2003 or later|
|SL U20||SL Major||01/09/2001 or later|
For subsequent seasons, the league name will remain identical and the age eligibility will move up one year (eg. SL Primary would become 01/09/2010 or later)
Age groups are entirely in line with BE age groups.
The 2021 season starts on the 01/01/2021 and ends on 31/12/2021
SL matches so that matches are played from 1st January until 31st May at the age groups U12, U14, U16, U18 and U20 OR U11, U13, U15, U17, U19, (U21?)
Play-offs are played in June/early July.
Finals in September.
Plan for next season in October/November.
Have AGM in November and make fixtures for next season.
